Bougainvillea

I have seen bougainvillea plant grow as wines as well as trees.

What do you think is the color of flowers? Pink ? Purple? I must say you are wrong  if you believe bougainvillea flowers are pink or purple. In reality bougainvillea flowers are white!!!

I did not know this until Sangeetha explained about it. The pink and purple “petals” are nothing but leaves! These leaves are modified i.e they have changed their colors to attract insects for pollination. Obviously, unlike the other leaves due to absence of chlorophyll these don’t take part in photosynthesis.

The white tiny flower is the actual flower. Each so called “petal” has a bud attached. I am not sure if these plants have nectar but I have read humming birds and butterflies do visit the flowers. I don’t know if they are duped.
